The Natural World—A SAQA Nebraska Regional Showcase
The opening show will be held at Lauritzen Gardens Atrium in Omaha, NE in April of 2019. Other venues will be added when secured.
“The Natural World” will consist of approximately 20 artworks.
The natural world encompasses everything from flora and fauna to rocks and minerals; vast celestial orbits to microscopic organisms and has been the inspiration of artists for centuries.
This showcase of art quilts will encourage members to interpret their own unique vision of, and connection to, this amazing natural world whether abstract, graphic or representational. Issues of the environment concerning conservation, sustainability, preservation and threatened habitats may also be addressed.
We intend to add an interactive component to this showcase at a public library and other locations to share our work with more tactile members of our communities. We will be asking each participating artist to provide a “touchable” piece of similar work to their showcased piece. This could be a cutoff scrap from the original construction or a similar pieces that each viewer can actually touch.
Children’s groups from the community where the exhibit is located will be invited to come to a structured docent/artist guided walk through of the showcase. Suggestions for a craft/art project or coloring page that the teacher or leader can do with the group will be provided.
Any and all works accepted into this SAQA showcase will need to be available to travel March 15, 2019 – December 31, 2020 and are required to travel to all venues with the showcase and must be available for the full run of the show (through December 2020).
In order for work to be considered for inclusion, we ask that artists engineer their pieces to be able to be rolled, folded or otherwise able to travel between venues in one box with the other works in the showcase.

ELIGIBILITY AND GUIDELINES
PLEASE PAY CAREFUL ATTENTION TO THESE REQUIREMENTS; ANY SUBMITTED PIECES THAT DEVIATE FROM THESE PARAMETERS WILL NOT BE ACCEPTED. SHOULD ANY PORTION OF THE PROSPECTUS BE IN CONFLICT WITH OTHER SAQA DOCUMENTS, THE WORD OF THE PROSPECTUS IS FINAL.
- Artist must be a primary or secondary SAQA Nebraska member to enter.
- Artwork must be the artist’s original design. Photos may be used for reference but actual work must be an interpretation of the photo and respect all copyright laws and considerations.
- Consideration is by digital images only (directions below).
- Collaboration is permitted, provided that(a) Each person collaborating is a SAQA member with Nebraska as their primary or secondary designation;
- (b) The collaborative artwork is entered on the same entry form as the individual artist serving as the contact artist for that collaboration. It is entered as a separate artwork that lists the names of all collaborating artists in the space provided. It is entered only once, each collaborating artist does not also enter that same work on another form;(c) Only one fee is charged for the individual artist’s form, regardless of the number of artworks(up to 3 pieces) made by the artist, with or without collaborators, listed on that form;
- (d) The collaborative work is counted as one of the three artworks each artist is permitted to enter. A collaborating artist may submit two additional artworks, either as solo artists or in collaboration with another artist.
- There are no restrictions regarding the publication of your artwork prior to submitting your entry. SAQA encourages you to blog about your work in progress.
- Artists may submit 3 works, including any collaborative work (see #4 above). Showcase coordinators will use ArtCall for entry through the SAQA Site
- Size Requirements: 20″- 60″ H x 20″- 36″ W (Height = vertical
dimension; Width = horizontal dimension). Work must be in the portrait (vertical) orientation. Please observe the size requirements carefully; any work that does not meet the size requirements will not be accepted or hung.
- All submitted work will be accepted, but venues have the right to restrict hanging due to size restrictions or at the discretion of the venue.
- 3-D and freestanding works will not be considered.
- Artwork must meet the SAQA definition of an art quilt: The art quilt is a creative visual work that is layered and stitched or that references this form of stitched layered structure.
- Artists are responsible for shipping and insurance to the showcase coordinator. SAQA will arrange to insure the artworks during the exhibition and while it travels, until it is returned to the artist.
- Artwork MAY be for sale. Not all venues will offer the art work for sale. Most venues that will offer art work for sale will change a commission, the commission will not exceed 50%.
- Work must be available to travel March 15, 2019 through December 31, 2020. Travel details to follow. It is the policy of SAQA that once work is accepted, it cannot be withdrawn for any reason until the end of the run.
- The Artist(s) confirms, to the best of their ability, the artwork entered does not violate any copyright or trademark laws.
- By submitting their work for review, the Artist(s) confirm they will adhere to all the above.
GUIDELINES FOR CONSIDERATION – Checklist of what you will need to provide

“Artist’s Stated Value” is the value of the artwork determined by the artist which represents the
(1) The US dollar amount the work would be priced, if it was for sale. Do NOT deduct any amount for commission when determining this value.
(2) The status of the Artwork (for sale or NFS) and the amount of the Sales Price or Artist’s Stated Value, as entered in the entry form, may not be changed after the entry form is submitted. The same status and value must be shown in the Artist’s Contract signed by accepted artists and must remain the same throughout the term of the exhibition.
Please follow the requirements in the Call for Entry carefully. The requirements are specific to each show depending on the size of the venue, the available shipping container, and the particulars of the chosen theme. If your submission doesn’t fit the parameters, it will not be accepted into the showcase.
After completing your entry, please add @saqa.com to your email approved senders list so you receive notifications regarding your entry.
Special Note: We encourage you to send the best photos you can. It is strongly recommended you have professional shots taken of your work. Photos should be in sharp focus, showing all edges of the art quilt, be well lit, with correct color and no distortions. The quilt should be the only item visible in the image other than a white, black or gray background. Furthermore, if you are selected for the exhibition, your submission photos will be used for the exhibition catalog. Therefore, your images need to be of the highest possible quality. How to submit digital images
▪ Submit one overall DIGITAL image and one detail DIGITAL image for each entry. No photo of your additional small sample piece is required.
▪ The artist name must not be visible in the images. Any artist(s) names or watermark(s) visible in the image must be masked, covered or removed to preserve the integrity of the blind jury process.
▪ The file format should be JPEG files (no TIFF files), saved at maximum quality (minimum compression).
▪ The longest side of the “live” area of the artwork (not including the background) should be at least 2100 pixels. Larger is fine so long as the longest side of the overall image does not exceed 4200 pixels.
▪ Label your images in whatever way is useful to you in retrieving and uploading the images to the online entry form. The entry system will overwrite that label with a new filename based on the entry number as part of the “blind” jury process.
▪ Image must be shot straight on. Use a tripod and make sure the camera is level and parallel to the artwork. Center the image in the viewfinder.
▪ Lighting must be even. It should not be darker or a different color temperature from one side to the other or from top to bottom. Make sure you have sufficient light to properly expose the image.
▪ Shoot on a contrasting background. For example, if your quilt edge has a lot of black, shoot on white or gray.
▪ All edges of the quilt must be visible. Do not crop into the borders or binding. We must be able to tell where your quilt edge ends and the background begins. Do not remove the background and do not add drop shadows with software.
▪ Check focus after shooting. Upload to your computer and zoom to 100% to see if the image is sharp and has sufficient detail.

I agree to loan my artwork to Studio Art Quilt Associates, Inc. I understand the costs of insuring and shipping my artwork to the coordinators are my responsibility. I further agree to permit the images or detail images and/or all or part of my artist statement to be used in the exhibition catalog, articles, ads, promotions, books, websites, blogs, CDs, current event news coverage, television productions, and/or multi-media productions for and about the exhibit or for and about the shows at which the exhibit may be seen.
$35 USD for up to 3 entries. Members must pay their fees using a credit card (MC, Visa or Amex) or PayPal through the SAQA website: http://www.saqa.com/fees. The fee must be paid before the entry deadline listed above. Reminder: for collaborative work, the entry must be made in the name of all participating artists.
